How to prevent keyless theft

With a rise in car theft and the surge of keyless vehicles, we are all asking the same question, how can I protect and keep my car safe from keyless theft?

According to the RAC, “Over 150,000 vehicles were stolen in Great Britain in the year 2018-19. That's 10,000 more than the year before and 56% higher than 2014-15.” With these worrying figures, we are going to provide you with some advice and information on what is keyless theft? Are keyless cars easier to steal? And most importantly, how to prevent and protect your vehicle from keyless theft.

What is keyless theft?

Keyless theft, also known as relay theft, works using short-range radio waves. The key will transmit a signal which is then picked up by the receiver in your car.

This type of theft tricks your car into thinking that your keys are physically present.

Thieves, working in pairs or more, will target a car usually parked outside of a house.

One thief will stand close to your house with the device, which boosts the signal from your car keys. The other thief, standing close to your vehicle with a second device, will use the signal to then unlock your car.

The car has been easily fooled, thinking that the keys are nearby when they are not.

Are keyless cars easier to steal?

Any vehicle that uses keyless entry will be at risk of relay theft and as such, can be an easy target for thieves that know what they are doing.

If thieves have the correct equipment, stealing a keyless car is an easy process and can only take twenty to thirty seconds.

How to avoid keyless theft?

Keep car keys away from entry points

Keep your keys far away from doors and windows. By leaving the keys close to the door, it is easier for thieves to pick up the signal. By placing your keys further away from your vehicle, it is more for thieves to pick up the signal.

Turn off keyless entry on your fob

Wireless signals on some keyless fobs can be turned off, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. This should be inside the car’s manual.

Parking

Are you leaving your car in a secure place? Places that are secure for your car can include your garage, a driveway or somewhere close to your property.

Invest in car security

There are many additional security measures that you can put in place to keep your car secure.

There are many different types of vehicle security equipment out there, and it is important to make sure you are purchasing the right ones.

Trackers, steering wheel locks, signal blocking pouches for your car keys and immobilisers all offer various levels of protection for your vehicle.

How can an immobiliser prevent keyless theft?

The CAN-phantom prevents keyless theft, as the device stops the engine from starting until a personal PIN code has been entered. Even if thieves were to enter the vehicle, they still won’t be able to start the car’s engine.

Our device offers complete discretion. Unlike a steering wheel lock, the CAN-phantom is not on display and therefore can’t be easily removed. The device is hidden within the wiring loom of a car, which makes the device securely hidden from thieves.

We are dedicated in our mission to offer a revolutionary security device which will put an end to car theft. The CAN-phantom vehicle immobiliser will prevent keyless theft.

Secure your vehicle today and stay one step ahead of the thieves.
