Specialist motor insurance loss adjuster, Claims Management & Adjusting (CMA), part of the QuestGates Group, has welcomed the new Association of British Insurers (ABI) roadmap “to combat the rising costs of motor cover”, and recommended anti-theft number plate bolts as the best value solution for The Cheapest Anti Theft Device 2024.
Philip Swift, a former detective, now Technical Director at CMA, said: “While we very much welcome the ABI’s new strategy to reduce premiums by tackling vehicle thefts and vehicle frauds, this initiative will likely take years to come to fruition.
“In the meantime, vehicle crime is rocketing. Car thefts were up 8% in England and Wales last year, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and number plate thefts have more than doubled since 2018 to well over 50,000 per annum, with many unreported.
“Far from a trivial matter, plate thefts are integral to a whole host of criminal activities – from serious crimes like armed robbery, to bilking petrol stations, and increasingly prevalent frauds to avoid parking and emission zone fines.
“Sadly, it is becoming ever more common for completely innocent motorists to face the shocking ordeal of being detained, or even arrested, simply because crooks have used their vehicle reg in very basic car cloning. Such action is often triggered via an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera, and it can take hours or even days to discover that it is actually a case of vehicle identity theft.
“From a policing and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) perspective, there is a pressing data issue here. How many clones or false-plated vehicles does it take to make our keeper database so compromised as to be unreliable? And how much police time is wasted as a result?
“For all these reasons, we urge motorists to take proactive steps to protect themselves against vehicle crime, starting with anti-theft plate number bolts. For the price of a takeaway, they are such an easy win. Rudimentary they may be, but most criminals encountering them will simply move on to a softer target, so they make a remarkably effective deterrent.”
